MATERIALS

porcelain clay –  We purchase all our clay, glazes, and tools from our local pottery supply shop, Carolina Clay Connection.  This independent business was started by Jinny over 25 years ago when she noticed a need for a pottery supply business in Charlotte. I love going in to chat and talk shop with her and her team.

natural fibers – We source our natural fibers from small yarn shops. When not home in Charlotte, I love to seek out local yarn shops wherever I am traveling. It is my way of getting to know a town. Bringing home these skeins of cotton, wool, and linen reminds me of the kindness and resilience these shops embody.

metal components – We make most of our own components in our studio, but when we buy chains or jump rings we source components that are hand crafted in the United States from teams of generational craftsmen. We use sterling silver, 24k gold-filled, and copper accents in our work and all the bases are lead and nickel free and hypoallergenic. We carefully collect and recycle all our metal scraps.

TECHNIQUES

weaving – we use this time honored technique of building cloth using interlocking threads. We weave everything by hand. You will find this technique in our loom blocks, woven necklaces, and pillow trims.

wrapping – deceptively simple, but this is one of the most difficult skills to master. Threads are carefully placed one beside the next to create our signature color blocking effect. We carefully finish each section so that the wrapping is strong and secure.  You will find this technique on our wrapped square bangle, wrapped catamaran necklace, and artisan brooms.

hand-building ceramics – we start with a block of porcelain. We cut, roll, form, shape, and smooth it into our custom components. Each piece is fired twice (one to bisque and once to glaze) and fully vitrified for a strong lasting finish. The high fire glaze is artfully applied with brushes. You will find this technique in almost all of our jewelry and home décor.

hand-spinning – we start by cutting and laying out two bundles of natural cotton fibers. Borrowing techniques similar to braiding, we twist and twist and twist to create an artful rope. You will find this technique in our hand spun rope bracelets.

macramé – the art of tying knots. We have created our own knotting techniques that allow us to incorporate our natural fibers with our porcelain and metal components.  We love this juxtaposition of the hard and soft. You will find this technique in our macramé necklace and macramé hoop earrings.
